Thanks to the wonders of the internet, this morning my wife and I were able to sit here in our home in rural Alaska and watch our granddaughter graduate with honors from her pre-med education in Iowa City. She will now go off to Texas for medical school, and we’re very proud of her – and proud that the University of Iowa conducted the ceremony with no political talk, no grandstanding by students, nothing of that sort; it was handled properly, aside from the usual screeching from the stands by loudmouths who apparently think they are at a sportsball game, not a serious event that should be conducted with decorum.

Meanwhile, at New York University (NYU) one Logan Rozos, a student given the privilege of speaking at NYU’s commencement proceedings, broke from his approved speech to engage in a torrent of verbal steatorrhea about Israel and Gaza – and as a result of him speaking so freely about something he knows nothing about, NYU is withholding his diploma.
New York University said it is withholding the diploma of a student who condemned the “genocide” in Gaza while delivering a graduation speech Wednesday – a move the university called a violation of the student’s commitment to comply with school rules.
Logan Rozos told members of his graduating class that “as I search my heart today in addressing you all … the only thing that is appropriate to say in this time and to a group this large is a recognition of the atrocities currently happening in Palestine.”
Logan Rozos knew what the university’s rules were. He may have disagreed with them, but in accepting admittance at the school he tacitly agreed to abide by them. He didn’t, and now he counts the cost.
Without naming Rozos, Beckman said the student speaker “lied about the speech he was going to deliver and violated the commitment he made to comply with our rules.”
“The university is withholding his diploma while we pursue disciplinary actions,” (university spokesperson John) Beckman said, adding that the school is “deeply sorry that the audience was subjected to these remarks and that this moment was stolen by someone who abused a privilege that was conferred upon him.”

There is as yet no indication as to what the disciplinary actions may be, or how long the diploma will be withheld; I’d be OK with “forever,” but that’s up to NYU.

This kid majored in cultural criticism and political economy, which comes as no surprise; uninformed outpouring like this all too often comes from young skulls full of mush who pursue these kinds of Ethics of Underwater Dog-Polishing Studies degrees. Logan Rozos is clearly one of those, and his rant shows that: There is no genocide in Gaza, and there is no “Palestine.” There is a war between Israel and Hamas, which was provoked by a brutal and unprecedented attack on Israel by Hamas, in which Hamas murdered entire families, gang-raped young women, and took hostages, some of whom they still hold in Gaza. Israel realizes, correctly, that there will be no peace in Gaza until Hamas is no longer a factor, and they are acting accordingly.
Hopefully, more universities will start meting out consequences on grandstanders like Logan Rozos. It’s worth doing, every day and twice on Commencement Day, pour encourager les autres.
